Preston

Preston achieved City Status in 2002, making it England's newest city!

Preston's history dates back to the Domesday Book and to 1179 with the granting of it's Charter, giving Preston Royal Borough status. It is today the administrative capital of Lancashire.

Richard Arkwright revolutionised the textile industry in 1769 with the invention of his water frame known as The Spinning Jenny. His house, now a centre for Age Concern can be seen down Stoneygate just a few feet away from the 'Old Cockpit' which is the site where the Temperance movement first began. "The Teetotaler"

To the south runs the River Ribble, on which the towns prosperity grew, with Preston Docks being a world leader in container ship technology. Until around 1980 a ferry still ran from Preston to Ireland.

Winckley Square in Preston is the finest example of a privately planned Georgian development with Open Space in the North of England. Just 50 yards from Preston's main shopping thoroughfare, this beautifully landscaped parkland is a peaceful urban refuge from the hurly-burly of city life. The story of the buildings and residents of this famous Preston square is available through the link below:
